Introduction
- tenesmus is the sensation of needing to pass stool often associated with pain, cramps and straining despite little stool being passed
- it is usually associated with inflammation of the rectum (proctitis) or sigmoid colon, or irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) but may also occur with adjacent non-bowel conditions
Aetiology
- prolapsed haemorrhoids
- rectocele
- vaginal prolapse
- renal colic with calculus at VUJ
- chronic arsenic poisoning
