creatinine kinase (CK)
introduction
- CK is a serum protein that is raised in any condition which causes damage to muscle cells, including the heart
- it's use as a cardiac marker for acute myocardial infarction (AMI/STEMI/NSTEMI) has now been largely replaced by troponin levels which are more specific for cardiac damage than even the CK-MB subtype.

- exertion
- prolonged seizures
- muscle ischaemia
- compartment syndrome
- crush injuries
- arterial insufficiency eg. thrombus / peripheral vascular disease (PVD or PAD)
- muscle trauma
- im injections
