Vincent's angina - fusospirochaetal infection of the pharynx and tonsils

• 1st described by Jean Hyacinthe Vincent and noted the infection was caused by infection with two types of bacteria called fusiform (Fusobacterium spp.) and spirochaetes (Borrelia spp. and Spirillum spp.) (which also cause his Vincent's gingivitis - fusospirochaetal necrotising gingivitis )

• immunocompromise

• similar to tonsillitis
• tonsils show single or multiple greyish-white ulcers, usually on only one of the palatine tonsils
  • ulcers appear surrounded by reddened area and they bleed when touched or when the pseudo membrane is removed
  • ulceration may extend onto the soft palate

• streptococcal tonsillitis
• diphtheria
• syphilis
• acute leukaemia
