• trimethoprim is a folate antagonist antibiotic mainly used to Rx urinary tract infections (UTIs) / cystitis
• it acts by inhibiting dihydrofolate reductase
• it is often combined with a sulphonamide antibiotic as co-trimoxazole which now is little used as the sulphonamide component adds little for most infections while increasing risk of hypersensitivity reactions and other adverse effects.

• urinary tract infections (UTIs) / cystitis or mild-mod. epididymo-orchitis
  • 300 mg (child: 6 mg/kg up to 300 mg) orally, daily for 14 days
