introduction
trimethoprim is a folate antagonist antibiotic mainly used to Rx
urinary tract infections (UTIs) / cystitis
it acts by inhibiting dihydrofolate reductase
it is often combined with a sulphonamide antibiotic as
co-trimoxazole
which now is little used as the sulphonamide component adds little for most infections while increasing risk of hypersensitivity reactions and other adverse effects.
