• palpitations are a common symptom in the ED population
• in the younger adult in particular, they are most commonly related to anxiety/stress but there are important conditions to consider such as:
  • stimulant use
  • hyperthyroidism
  • pulmonary embolism (PE)
  • pregnancy
  • anaemia
  • sepsis / septicaemia
  • atrial fibrillation
  • and the more rare and potentially life threatening cardiac abnormalities
