spirometers

This is an old revision of the document!

spirometers

see also:

  • medical devices including spirometers MUST have TGA approval for legal use on patients
    • there are many online devices available which do not have TGA approval which presumably could only be used for personal use at own risk
    • for example, Contec SP70B:
      • only costs about $160 but the syringe to calibrate it costs about $800 which consumers will not be buying
      • gives a major error with PEFR% in the summary but the actual data appears reasonably correct
      • the volume vs time chart shows incorrect volumes on teh display but correct ones on pdf output
      • only uses outdated prediction equations (USA (NHANES), SBPT, ECSC, Knudson) and not the current GLI standard
      • but it can Bluetooth output to smartphone app for saving the PDFs and also for entering your personal data such as height, age
      • hence would not be approved by TGA as does not comply with their essential principles in particular accuracy

TGA approved spirometers

  • amongst the least expensive are the very light, compact PC-based spirometers such as:
    • MIR MiniSpir 2 at $AU999 excl. gst but includes 60 free turbine mouthpieces
