• as of July 2010, medical registration was nationalised following the March 2008 decision of the Council of Australian Governments (COAG) to establish a national scheme of registration.
  • this body will also be the registration body for nursing and midwifery, physiotherapy, pharmacy, psychology, optometry, osteopathy, podiatry, chiropractic and dentistry, and from July 2012, also for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health practitioners, Chinese medicine practitioners, medical radiation practitioners and occupational therapists.
  • an important change is the mandatory reporting requirement for ANY of these registrants to report another registrant if they reasonably believe there has been a notifiable conduct such as:
    • practiced the profession while intoxicated by drugs or alcohol
    • engaged in sexual misconduct in connection with their practice of the profession
    • placed the public at risk of substantial harm in their practice because they have an impairment
    • placed the public at risk of harm because of a significant departure from accepted professional standards
