• simple gingivitis is very common and painless and mainly due to poor dental hygiene - see periodontitis
• acute ulcerative gingivitis is relatively common and painful, and usually caused by primary Herpes simplex virus (HSV) infection, or hand, foot and mouth infection in children

• occasionally, acute necrotizing ulcerative gingivitis may occur

• acute non-contagious severe gingivitis, most common in young adults or malnourished children
• it was called trench mouth in WWI soldiers
• painful, bleeding gums and ulceration and necrosis of the interdental papilla and usually is associated with halitosis
• may lead to necrotizing ulcerative periodontitis
